Lucia lives in a world of her creation that she navigates with a fresh set of eyes and a curious mind. Here everyday objects are fascinating and her surroundings are examined through a combination of costumes and toys. She has yet to master language, therefore, relies solely on her senses for guidance. "Lucía Means Light" transforms the lens to an imaginary friend that accompanies her through a journey of exploration and discovery.
I never had any siblings growing up, I was an only child with a single mother. My smallest cousin was born 17 years later. Until Lucia came into this world I did not understand what it meant to watch someone grow by your side. In her eyes, everything is a constant revelation and somehow I found myself present, with a camera in hand, every time she did. Our communication exists through the unidentifiable contraption she sees in my hand everyday.
As the voyage through her world deepened, I found myself living the wonders of childhood through her unstoppable mind. Here, the family photographic album transforms into more than just snapshots of a young family member. Each image tries to take a step further and marvel at her imagination.
